📶  Internet Connection

Having a fast and stable internet connection is vital to successful streaming. If you have a slow or unstable connection, your viewers might see stuttering, buffering, and if there’s a really long interruption in your stream, your Live Session will eventually end. Frustrating!

How do I test my internet connection?

For most internet uses like streaming movies you want a fast download speed. But when you’re doing live streaming, it’s all about upload speed.

To test your upload speed, go to speedtest.net.

Make sure you’re not streaming or using your network for anything intensive when performing the test.

This shows a very good upload speed.

This shows a very good upload speed.

<aside> ⚠️ Be aware that Speedtest will show if you have a good Upload speed but it won’t show you if your connection is unstable, which can happen especially if you’re on WIFI or you have a faulty Ethernet cable. So testing a livestream on Echio is essential even if you have a very good upload speed.

How do I improve my internet connection?

Step 1 : check that you have a good connection to your modem/router.

Generally this means connecting your computer directly to your router with an ethernet cable.

If you have to use an adapter to connect your ethernet cable to your computer (USB-C to Ethernet for instance), make sure you have a good quality adapter and NEVER use multiple adapters (like Ethernet to USB 3.0 to USB-c).

Streaming from WiFi is discouraged, as it is less stable that an Ethernet/Cable connection even if you have fast Internet. If you really have to use Wi-Fi, make sure you’re close enough to your modem/router.

Step 2 : make sure you have a good data plan with your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Ideally you should have a plan offering an UPLOAD speed of at least 5 Mbps or higher (download speed is not that important for streaming). You’ll need to talk to your ISP directly about options.
